Zimbra Mobile

Zimbra Collaboration Suite (ZCS) can be accessed from a wide range of mobile devices - from mass market handsets to smartphones such as iPhone, Blackberry, Windows Mobile. Most modern devices are able to connect to Zimbra using POP3 and IMAP for email only using the built in email capabilities of their device, however Zimbra provides the following solutions to allow you to access not just email, but your contacts and calendar:

Mobile Optimised Webmail

All devices with HTML capable browsers, including the Apple iPhone, have real time access to the Zimbra Server using the Zimbra Mobile Web Client which is optimised for use on mobile devices.

To use the Zimbra Mobile Web Client, simply point your HTML capable browser at your Zimbra Server URL and append "/m" to the end e.g. http://zimbraservername.com/m/). No additional license is required and it can be used for free.

Zimbra Mobile Web Client features

  • Real time access to email, address book, and calendar
  • View shared content (folders, contacts, schedules)
  • Zimbra conversation views
  • Conduct advanced mailbox searches
  • View all folders, saved searches, flags and tags

Zimbra J2ME Mobile Edition

Zimbra J2ME Mobile Edition (beta) is a downloadable application that provides Over The Air (OTA) data synchronization on mobile devices which support Java / J2ME (most do). It is compatible with all versions of Zimbra from 4.5 onwards and is free to download and use.

Zimbra J2ME Mobile Edition provides a seamless experience whereby emails, calendar and contact information is updated in almost real time using "push" synchronisation techniques similar to what is possible on smartphones. It also integrates many of Zimbra’s innovative features, features which you will not find when using the inbuilt applications on smartphones, so for many people it provides the best of both worlds.

Zimbra J2ME Edition features

  • Rich client user experience
  • Real time access to email, address book, and calendar
  • Zimbra conversation views
  • Conduct advanced mailbox searches
  • View folders, saved searches, flags and tags
  • Manage calendar events; accept / decline meetings
  • Quick access key option to navigate the application
  • Customizable shortcuts, e.g. #0 to tag the current message with "Important"

Zimbra Mobile

Zimbra Mobile for Smartphones enables two-way, over-the-air synchronization of mail, contacts, calendar and task data between the mobile device and the Zimbra Server. It features "push" synchronisation which sends updates (new emails, email read status & deletes, updates to your calendar etc.) in real time to your device from the Zimbra Server and vice versa.

Zimbra Mobile is an optional license which must be purchased (can be enabled on a per mailbox basis for Zimbra Hosted customers) and requires no additional software with supported devices (just enter the Zimbra Server address and your user name, similarly to how you'd configure your device to access Microsoft Exchange Server).

Fully supported devices include iPhone, Treo 650, 680, 700 w/p, Nokia E-Series, Motorola Q, and Samsung Blackjack. To use Zimbra Mobile, devices must support ActiveSync either natively or via a thirdparty download such as RoadSync. Full details (opens new window).

Blackberry Internet Service (BIS)

The Blackberry Internet Service (BIS) supports the ability to synchronise emails between a Blackberry handset and a remote Mailbox using the handsets’ Internet connection (known as Over the Air sync). Calendar and Contacts are not supported via OTA and must be synchronised using the desktop software supplied with the handset. Usually people who purchase a Blackberry as an individual or very small business from their network operator will be using the BIS service.

No additional Zimbra licenses are required to use BIS as the service uses the IMAP protocol to connect to the mailbox.

Zimbra Mobile Connector for BlackBerry

Zimbra integrates directly with the Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES) allowing Over The Air (OTA) synchronization between the Zimbra Server and all BlackBerry devices. The solution uses standard BES software and there is nothing to install on the Blackberry handsets.

There is no additional charge to use the Zimbra Mobile Connector for BlackBerry, although a license for Zimbra Mobile must be purchased and you must be running BlackBerry Professional or BlackBerry Enterprise Server for Exchange.

In-Tuition plan to implement full support for Zimbra Mobile Connector for Blackberry with In-Tuition’s Hosted Zimbra by the end of Q4, 2009.

NB Zimbra Mobile Connector for Blackberry is only required if you wish to synchronise your calendar and address book in addition to your email, or require the advanced features offered by BES. Many individuals and small businesses synchronise their email using the Blackberry Internet Service (BIS) which is available on most networks and then use the Blackberry cradle to synchronise their address book and calendar. In such cases, a Zimbra Mobile license is not required as BIS uses IMAP to connect to the Zimbra mailstore.

Zimbra Mobile Connector for BlackBerry features

  • Over-the-air synchronization of mail, address book, calendar in the native BlackBerry UI
  • Sync to all BlackBerry devices
  • Full access to Zimbra GAL
  • Search messages
  • Open / view attachments
  • Manage calendar events; accept / decline meetings
  • Administrators add / provision users directly in the BlackBerry Administration Console
